The York Synchronized Swim Club is
celebrating a silver lining.
And that’s not bad at all for a debut
performance at the national championship
level.
The club’s Tier 6 open team capped a
successful season on the weekend by
snapping up a silver medal at the
Canadian Espoir synchronized swimming
national championships held on the
weekend at the Etobicoke Olympium.
The squad entered the competition
riding a wave after capturing gold
medals at the Ontario Winter Games and
Eastern Canada divisional championships.
It was a winning edge that carried into
the national competition.
“After the Eastern divisionals we had
a sense that we had a chance to do well
at nationals,” said head coach Mary-Jane
Ling. “Still, it was a bit of a surprise
because you never know what could
happen.”
The York team stood in second place
among 11 teams after the compulsory
portion of the competition and held that
spot by duplicating its result in the
team routine for a 68.494 score.
Saskatoon Aqualenes won the gold medal
with a combined score of 69.846.
Burlington finished in third place at
68.129.
“The club has been progressing over
the years at the provincial level,” said
Ling. “This is something we thought we
would let the girls experience and then,
silver, there it was.”
The team is comprised of Kara
Barclay, Jocelyn Bourrie, Ali Davies,
Katie Hildebrant, Erin Milner, Patricia
Moore, Bethany Mountford and Kaitlin
Sibbald.
