Select synchro team wins Canadian gold

Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club ended the 2005-06 season on a winning note at the Canadian Espoir championships.

The BSSC Tier 6/7 select team, which finished fourth in the country last year, scored 71.274 to finish atop the standings this year. More than 250 swimmers took part in the event, held June 1-4 in Saskatoon.

Team members include Hilary Baines, Lee-Ann Barna, Meghan Danielson, Katie Gandy, Elizabeth Metzler, Michelle Reichert, Stephanie Saunders, & Alicia Worlidge. BSSC head coach Janet Herman guided the team to victory.

Earlier, the BSSC had the highest overall rank at the tier championships in Waterloo. Burlington's combined score from Tier 1-5 routines was highest of any club.

Finishing behind Burlington in second place was Waterloo Region, followed by Nepean. BSSC finished sixth overall in Tier 1, fourth in Tier 3, seventh in Tier 4 and fifth in Tier 5. The Tier 2 team didn't make the finals.

Duets and solos also competed in Waterloo. Kristin Peck was second and Megan Howarth fourth in the Tier 1 figures while teammate Brianna Jennings was 25th in a field of 152.

Tops in Tier 2 figures was Jamey Buckingham at 24th.

BSSC fared well in Tier 3, with Evelina Wolejszo and Katie Lawson finishing first and second, respectively, and Morgan Leblanc taking sixth. Deanna Sokoloski was 21st.

Best in Tier 4 figures was Kaitlyn Buis, 12th, followed by Alisha Halgren, 17th. In Tier 5, Colleen Carrigan was 12th, Robin Lynch was 16th and Rachel Winn, 21st. Three BSSC athletes finished in the top 25 in Tier 6. Stephanie Saunders was 6th, Michelle Reichert was ninth and Alicia Worlidge was 11th. Meghan Danielson and Hilary Baines finished second and third, respectively, in a field of four in Tier 7.

In duets, Lawson and Leblanc edged BSSC teammates Brideau and Wolejszo for first overall in a field of 11. In Tier 4, Buis and Halgren finished fourth among 11. Lynch and Wynn took fifth in a group of seven teams in Tier 5 duets. Saunders and Worlidge were runners-up in the Tier 6 competition. Only two duets competed in Tier 7, with Baines and Danielson winning.
