Soloist makes debut at World Juniors

OTTAWA – Elise Marcotte tested international waters Thursday as she competed for Canada at the 9th World Junior Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Marcotte is representing Canada in the solo event and after Thursday’s preliminary routine sits fifth among the 29 international entries.

Marcotte, from Ancienne-Lorette QC, is in her first year with the national team.

The 15-year-old posted a routine score of 90.700.

In first place is Russia’s Natalia Ichtchenko with a score of 96.000 followed by Christina Jones of the U.S. who earned a routine score of 93.400. Rounding out the top three was Japan’s Takako Konishi with a score of 93.300. Italy’s Beatrice Adelizzi is in fourth with a mark of 91.400.

The solo finals will take place Sunday morning.

Later in the day Canada was back in the pool for the team combo event where they currently sit tied for fifth with Italy with a routine score of 91.600.

Russia continued its dominance as they once again lead the pack with a score of 95.800, Japan is second with 94.100 and the United States is third with marks of 92.700. China remains in fourth with a score of 91.800.

The final will be held Sunday as the final event of the competition.

Friday will be a quieter day for the team with the figures competition taking place.
