That's the number of times the Markham Synchro Club has held the bragging rights by earning the coveted aggregate title from the Ontario tier championships.

Capturing 10 consecutive titles from 1988 to 1997 and another one in 2000, the club's latest accomplishment took place in Nepean.

With 24 other clubs from across the province in attendance at the annual four-day competition, Markham swimmers claimed a plethora of awards that added up to earning this year's aggregate title. Among them were: 33 medals, three ribbons, the T6/7 combo tier championship trophy, provincial tier titles in T3 Figures, T5 Duets, T6/7 Combo Team and athletes with disabilities figures and solo events.

"Success is about winning and having fun. To win the aggregate trophy, it's prestigious and it tells you that you're the best club in Ontario for 2003-04," Gayle Wimmer, Markham Synchro Club head coach, said of her club's feat.

A second-year head coach with Markham after being from the Olympium Synchro Club, Wimmer attributed her club's success to the dedication exhibited by her coaching staff and swimmers.

"They put their heart into their work," she said.

The dedication originated from an intensified, yet fun approach to training Wimmer incorporated this past season.

Part of the program saw swimmers enrolled in a Thornhill-based circus school known as the Wonder World of Circus.

Wimmer noted the school worked on various facets with the swimmers including flexibility and body awareness.

"A circus suggests fun and it was a plus for the swimmers to take this program. The kids had fun," she cited.

Wimmer also brought in a coach to conduct high level land, flexibility, endurance and psychological training.

During the season, the club also brought in some high level coaches and former Olympic swimmers to talk to the students.

"We've added a lot to our program," Wimmer said. "Anything you can do to build up flexibility, endurance and even some ballet work, anything can help."
