Three Georgina girls
swam their way to gold and silver in the
provincial synchronized swimming championships
at the Sportsplex in Nepean last month.
The three, all members of the Newmarket
Synchronized Swim Club, took part in the
competition hosted by the Gloucester Synchro
Club, the largest of its kind in Canada, with
more than 600 athletes from across the province
competing over the weekend.
Athletes from 25 clubs competed over the
weekend in figures, solo, duet and team
competition in tiers one through seven. The
competition also included competition for
masters category athletes and athletes with a
disability.
In tier one team competition, Catherine
Bourrie, 10, and Lea Gucciardi of Keswick
brought home the gold medal as part of their
team.
Catherine's sister Jocelyn, 13, struck silver
with her partner Laura Towsley, 14, of Aurora.
She also took silver in the tier four team
competition. Jocelyn and Laura have been on the
podium before, capturing the gold medal in the
Ontario Winter Games in London last March.
The tier one team is coached by Jennifer
Dwyer and Mary Jane Ling coaches the tier four
teams.
Catherine attends St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic
School while Lea and Jocelyn go to Our Lady of
the Lake Catholic College School.
Synchronized swimming is a particular
strength for Canadian women, with several
Olympic medals won in the past and more expected
for this summer's games in Athens.
